MICHIGAN INTERNATIONAL SPEEDWAY

This website is an online resource for Nascar enthusiasts, so if you have a great picture of Michigan International Speedway, send it to us for inclusion here. We'd also love to get your track stories.

Michigan International Speedway is considered one of the country's premier racing facilities, and yet, it still focuses on constant improvements. In 2000, a new 10,800-plus seat grandstand was built in Turn 3, providing a magnificent view of the entire Speedway and surrounding Irish Hills.

During the last resurfacing, MIS became the first track to use a polymer-enhanced asphalt especially formulated for high-banked racing and harsh Michigan winters. Previous surfaces were milled off and used to pave access roads leading to parking areas.

In 2005, MIS took on the largest renovation in its storied history by adding 870 additional seats with a new Club Level seating area called the Champions Club.

Michigan International Speedway Story and Photos June 2007

Site visitor Ronda Makela submitted the following commentary about her visit to MIS in June 2007, as well as some terrific photos. Click on the images to enlarge. Thanks, Ronda!

My fiancé Mike and I have been traveling from Blind River, Ontario, Canada to Brooklyn, Michigan for the Father's Day race for the last 4 years. We like to go down to Artesian Wells at the crossroads before you get to Brooklyn, have a few brown pops and some good food. It's the big Harley Dealership/Restaurant that almost everyone must drive by on the way to the track. The food is amazing, especially the whitefish done in that Drakes batter. We must have bought the store out (of that stuff, which is not sold in Canada) before we left.

The one night that we were there, (and I have to say, we went every night) Kurt Busch was there signing autographs and giving away a bunch of free Miller stuff.

Amazing. I had a chance to talk to him for a bit and people, the guy is so nice. He's not my driver and I don't wish him the wins, but I am a fan of any driver that is that polite and nice to talk to, especially under those circumstances. There were people yelling horrible remarks in his direction, others just pushing their way through just to get an autograph, drunks, and all kinds, but he smiled, held his cool, and was a gentleman to them all.

Every year when we go to MIS, we try to experience something new. In 2007 we decided to buy tickets to the Tail Gate Club. This year’s speaker was Bobby Allison. Mike and I had such a great time listening to Mr. Allison tell stories. He is one funny guy.

We also get pit passes every year, but every year we always find out more about what the passes allow you to do. While walking up and down the pits, we took a break to have a beer and met up with some fellow Canadians. Actually they are practically neighbors, as they live only 90miles from us back home. Their names were Dean and Pam from Sault Ste. Marie. I wished I had gotten their number. Hopefully we’ll see them again.

Anyway, we walked down the pits to check out the trucks that were getting ready to go out. We had a chance to get autographs from Jack Sprague & Ted Musgrave. We also stuck around long enough to see the Nextel Cup Drivers getting ready to go out for practice. Mike was so excited. His driver is JR. and while we were at the first box on pit row, he was chatting with JR. through his window and JR gave him a thumbs up.

My Mike cheers for JR through thick and thin, and I cheer like crazy for Jimmy. On race day, we get dressed up in our Lowes and Buds best ..

Foam race helmet, flags, t-shirts and mugs and I razz him constantly that my driver is going to win, and he usually does.

I teased him for the long time, saying that JR was going to jump the fence and go drive with the big boys. Low and behold did I think it really would happen.

But that's ok. I welcome JR to the Hendricks team. I think it will be an interesting year, people don't realize how good of friends they really are and how much they drive alike. I'm proud however of my Mike because he didn't kick JR to the curb when he found out he was going to Hendrick. That's because he is a fan of JR. A true JR fan.
